Substance Abuse and Addiction

Substance abuse and addiction is a complex disease that affects millions around the world. Addiction is a chronic disease characterized by substance seeking and use that is compulsive and difficult to control.

Despite harmful consequences, those who suffer from addiction find it challenging to maintain self-control. Not one singular factor can predict if an individual will suffer from addiction—a combination of factors such as biology, environment, and development influence an individual’s risk. Fortunately, with the right help, substance abuse and addiction can be treatable and successfully managed.

Substance abuse and addiction symptoms or behaviors include, among others1:

  • Drop in attendance and performance at work or school
  • Frequently getting into trouble (fights, accidents, illegal activities)
